New tram deliveries tend to be of highly standardised designs, such as the Siemens Combino. Helsinki was an early customer for the Variotram, as designed by ABB (which became Adtranz in 1995) and took 40 between 1998 and 2003. HKL (Helsinki City Transport) has been far from satisfied with their performance and had threatened to send them back. As successors to Adtranz, Bombardier agreed a compromise with HKL, undertaking the responsibilty for the trams' maintenance.
