Mary and Melanie I

I met Mary at the Essence Music Festival

Mary did her thing as usual at the 2007 Essence Music Festival. I spoke with several people who had never seen her in concert and they each expressed surprise at Mary’s range of emotion and vocal abilities. She is unlike any other artist that I know of and that is why I love and admire her so much. I have been a faithful fan for the last fifteen years. I’m not a fan that would win at MJB Personal Trivia Contest, but I can sing every song lyric and tell you most everything about her career. Until last weekend, Mary was just a figment of my imagination. I actually had the chance to briefly meet and take a picture with the Queen. Let me just say from Kendu to DonPooh, and the other members of her entourage, everyone was so nice and accommodating. When I asked Mary if she would take a picture and then I began rambling (as I think most would do upon meeting her), she said yes sure with a smile. She seemed a little tired, however, Mary was still very polite and did her thing once again. She looks so glamorous and genuine in the picture. I was too busy thanking Mary for the opportunity and my smile was flawed. Long story short, Mary was all that I imagined and then some. She is just like the rest of us. As we walked out of the hotel and noticed the rain, Mary frowned, grabbed her hair and said, “Oh no. I know it can’t be raining.” You know how rain effects a black woman’s hair or hair weave for that matter—we all can relate. Her life is just like yours and mine as she says in “My Life.” Mary’s “girl next door” persona resonates with strength in her music and keeps us yearning for more. Yearning for the next song that expresses how much we love that man or how to rebound and be strong after a break up. Her profound ability to relate to the everyday girl through song is rare commodity in today’s music industry. Thank you Mary for consistently pouring your heart and soul into your craft. We love you for it and I hope you continue to be blessed and HAPPY. By the way, those children are so cute and mannerable!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! -melanie beaver
