Strongbox, St Nicholas, North Walsham

An incredibly big, strong, heavy box, used to hold the parish records. The church is fourteenth century and I think this box is circa C16th.

I noticed there were thirteen hinges and I think seven locks, presumably a reference to the twelve apostles plus Jesus (or possibly the thirteen apostles, as Judas Iscariot was later 'replaced'). The locks perhaps refer to the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit.

All a bit guessworky though...

I was told it was a solid lead box, which doesn't sound right as Lead would be too soft and the colour is wrong. My guess is it's an Oak box with a lead lining and cover which appears to be nailed on. Either way it's massive and probably couldn't be moved without a crane.

It's not exactly beautiful unless you're an engineer, but it is genuinely impressive, as boxes go. Unless you're a good locksmith you'd probably need dynamite to get it open.

Saints and their Dragons group: OK so techernickerly St Nicholas wasn't renowned for his dragon slaying feats, but this little chap is in his church, and he's only very little, so... :-)
