printing ink
Printmaking is a messy business! these are the copper acid etched plates after they have been inked up. To ink up you must spread the thick sticky ink onto the plate with a scraper. then with a piece of tarlatan (wide meshed material) rub the ink into the lines. Then with another piece of tarlatan rub the ink back, so the areas free of etched lines come up like polished copper. Finally a quick wipe with a page from the phone book and clean up the edges and you are ready to place the plate onto the press bed and make a print. If you want another print you must repeat this inking up process again.
