The 45 minute snooze
Paris. January 2019.
Sony RX100M4. 24mm. 1/250. f/9. ISO6400.
I find it difficult to shoot on the subway because I feel like it’s too crowded for my liking and my subjects always feel too close to me. There’s also nowhere to escape to – one can’t just move on or walk away until the next station stop. In a way this gentleman could be considered to be easy prey as he dozed there with his eyes closed. I’d first noticed him as the train was moving through the tunnels but the composition came into being as we pulled into the station and his face mimicked that on the poster behind.
Unfortunately I’d not prepared my camera correctly in advance and it was still on a relatively small aperture and fast shutter speed from previous shots taken in the bright sunlight. I grabbed the shot as best I could in the time I had but the incorrect settings result in a very noisy image which the monochrome conversion only goes some way to concealing.
