Ever had the feeling that everyone goes QUACK! and you go HONK?
Get ready for some rollicking good fun as Re:Present - SMU Arts Festival 2009 exclusively brings you Anthony Drewe and George Stiles’ Honk! The Musical, a hilarious adaptation of Han’s Christian Andersen’s famed tale, The Ugly Duckling.
The musical, presented entirely by a talented SMU cast – from actors, musicians to stagehands - celebrates, in its own fowl way, the uncovering of cultural differences with great wit and ironic humour, and promises two heartwarming and enchanted nights at the Victoria Theatre.
In line with the Festival’s theme of re-presenting the impressions created through the confluence of time and art, Honk! The Musical will revisit the time-tried notions of first impressions, identities and differences. This is told through the tale of Ugly, the swan, whose misplaced belief that he is a duck, leads him into some much ridiculed waters.
Honk! The Musical is the Festival’s closing gala performance and will make a fitting finale to two rousing weeks of artistic celebrations. The musical is also a proud collaboration with Singapore’s arts industry professionals, with local thespian Sebastian Tan (Broadway Beng) making his directorial debut together with acclaimed musical director Elaine Chan (Chang and Eng, Dim Sum Dollies) and choreographer Filomar C Tariao (Everything but the Brain, Moment). Veteran actress Margaret Chan, a faculty member from SMU, makes a comeback to the stage with a guest appearance.
We invite one and all to transcend time and be enthralled by this whimsical tale of childhood proportions, and join Ugly in his quest to discovering his true self!
Special Guest:
Margaret Chan has a place in the history of Singapore’s English language theatre. Margaret began her stage career in the early 1970s by pioneering English language theatre clubs in the then University of Singapore Society and the Experimental Theatre Club. She was the first Singaporean invited to the prestigious Edinburgh Fringe Festival where in 1986 she performed Stella Kon’s monodrama Emily of Emerald Hill. Best known for her matriarch role in Masters of the Sea, the nation’s first English language TV drama series, she was also the first English language actress to crossover to the Chinese channel in 1995’s The Golden Pillow. Margaret Chan is currently Practice Asst Professor of Theatre/Performance Studies with the School Social Sciences at SMU.
Director: Sebastian Tan, aka Broadway Beng, makes his directorial debut in SMU’s production of Honk! The Musical. Sebastian’s theatre credits include Tidoudao, Twist of Fate, Jack & the Beansprout, the UK tour of Miss Saigon, Forbidden City, Honk! The Musical, Sing to the Dawn and Army Daze, among many others. He has also acted in local television shows Under One Roof, Growing Up and First Class. In 2006, he premiered his critically-acclaimed, stand-up musical comedy Broadway Beng!, which was followed by two more successful installments. Sebastian has been nominated twice in the Life! Theatre Awards for Best Supporting Actor for his performances in Twist of Fate (Singapore Repertory Theatre, 2006) and Titoudao (Toy Factory, 2008).
