Phase 5: Bubbles
Phase 5: Bubbles
Christine DheinJanuary 2005
When I received the piece, I realized that it had already been heated and pickled at least three times, in Phases 1, 3 and 4. This meant that the work the other members had done to the piece had already started to create a layer of fine silver on the surface of the metal, which is required for Keum-Boo, an Ancient Korean method, for bonding gold to the surface of silver, and my signature technique. I knew I would only have to heat and pickle the metal two more times in order to apply gold. I decided on small circles of gold both because they spoke to the holes and mushroom shapes, but also because for over ten years, circles have been the building block for most of my designs.
