Sandman Dunes

During my vacation to Emerald Isle, NC, I made a sand sculpture in the form of a Sandman. Originally I wanted it to be huge-six feet tall. But I was so exhausted after making a medium mound of sand that I settled for a smaller one. Sand sculpting is hard work, and I really respect the artists out there who can make complex shapes and structures. Just making a basic sandman took the better part of a day, but it was a lot of fun. It had different seashells for eyes, nose, mouth, and starfish for buttons with a beach towel scarf around its neck. It turned out really well, and I was proud of it. The sculpture actually lasted several days-with minimal patching here and there-and was a great conversation starter with people passing by on the beach. My family purchased an ornament that year to match the memory. We named the sandman "Dunes."

This image is my first attempt at HDR focus stacking. The plane was originally out of focus, but I took two brackets and merged the two images.
