hereisabee says: The true Witch Hazel, settlers to America needed hazel branches to practise the ancient art of 'water divining/dowsing' in order to find the right place to dig a well. Thus they liked the look of this plant due to the similarities in shape and leaves. This species flowers in the autumn, often it is used as a rootstock to graft more showy asiatic varieties, so if you are surprised to see autumn flowers on your witch hazel it is growth from the root stock which can be pruned away if necessary.
