Fencing lessons.

With the fence built, the next step was to spruce up the border of the driveway bed. The bulk of this bed is retained with railroad ties, but the first eight feet or so are cinderblock. This is an artifact of what used to be here. There used to be a carport extending across the driveway from the house, supported by two (rotted) wooden columns that came up out of brick column supports. (This is a style of column VERY common in Craftsman houses of this vintage in this area. In Samson, my mother's house had the same thing.)

The cinderblock is in good shape structurally but it's ugly. So the first step is to clad the tops of the old columns and the border with slate. Turns out I had JUST ENOUGH slate to finish this job, with only a couple of bits and bobs left over.

The next step is to paint the exposed cinderblock and brick brown (SW Black Bean) to match the porch, shutters, and house foundation.
