Cheat For The Win
One of the shots that I wanted on this trip was a Westbound freight at The Dalles with the former mill as the backdrop. After one afternoon of getting no train, we tried again three days later knowing there was a Westbound coming. Unfortunately, that train was held for a fleet of Eastbounds. We were losing time due to an obligation that evening (the real reason for the trip) when one of the intermodal trains happened to have two DPUs. Sometimes you just have to take what you can get.
The Sunshine Mill Winery occupies the site of the over 130-year-old Sunshine Mill, originally owned by the Sunshine Biscuit Company. This structure was the first in The Dalles to have electricity, powered by a Thomas Edison motor that is still on display inside the building. The wheat milled here was once used to make Cheez-Its. The winery has used the property since 2009.
