Northern Water Rat - Paraleptomys rufilatus

A very rare and localized species found only in a handful of small mountains of New Guinea's North Coast Range and Cyclops Mountains. Little is known about the life history or ecology of this primitive rodent. It has been rarely encountered. In 1986, we found it uncommon but regular in the Bewani Mountains. We believe it to be a leaf litter forager, searching for insects, worms and other arthropods. Note the large vibrisae on the snout. Photo is from the 1986 Bishop Museum Expedition to the Bewani Mountains, Papua New Guinea. Scanned from Kodachrome Slide.
