Fungi from The Boulders - North Queensland, Australia
The Babinda/Innisfail region is the wettest area in Australia averaging 4.0 metres rainfall a year (160 inches). Rainforest growth is strong and the area is recovering from Cyclone Larry in 2006, a category 4/5 cyclone. I took a lot of photos of the fungi I could find. No doubt there would be other fungi types, but you can’t deviate from the walking path because of the wait-a-whiles, plants bristling with prickles and hooks that grab you, and stinging trees.
Even though the cyclone opened up the canopy a lot, the light is often poor and my camera worked overtime to get stuff in focus. I took many photos in the hope of some turning out properly (like 1100 in one day). I am currently obtaining sources on fungi and hope I can name some of these in time. However I post them now without names. Some are very attractive. I have stated this before but it is said there are 250 000 fungi species in Australia with only 5 to 10% being properly classified.
