Rope marks from the days of horse drawn canal boats

Pottering about the Stratford and Grand Union canals at Kingswood junction recently, it was easy to see how their usage has changed. From the first system for the mass transport of raw materials and finished goods the canals have become a major leisure facility.

 

There's lots of 'messing about in boats', and fishing, as you might expect, but canals are also in many parts the 'motorways' of the footpath network, where local events can be publicised, and broadband fibre optics cables laid, even.
