Woodpecker poo etc
Much of the Malverns is covered by a low green sward, dense in places, made up of hundreds of different species of flowering plants and grasses, many of them microscopic, eking out an existence on the poor soils to be found here. These photos were taken during a visit by Redditch U3A Exploring Science Group. As you may surmise the details below would be way beyond my ken, but our guide on this day - Peter Garner, Plant Recorder for for Herefordshire, seemed omniscient!
The curve of what looks like polystyrene below the pen tip is Green Woodpecker Poo :- 'Green woodpecker poo resembles cigarette ash. A closer look reveals it is mostly made up of ant legs, heads & abdomens.'
Above the pen tip is a small rubber ring which is a device for castrating - we are told painlessly - lambs. It is called an Elastrator ring. The blood supply to the scrotum is cut off and the sac falls off within a few days.
I try to learn something new every day.
