Piqued by Peacocks
As if there isn't enough excitement in the yard with fourteen Yellow-crowned night herons nest-buidling and family planning in the pine tree, last week four feral peafowl landed in the backyard. Our jaws dropped. Have never ever had one come calling, let alone 4. Three of them have moved on; this peacock was either snoozing when they left, or he likes it here a lot.
Last night he made himself at home for the night in the pine tree with the heron colony. The herons, much to my surprise made no protest. He spends his day feeding, darting like a bolt of blue across the yard, hopping on the roof of the utility shed or the picnic table and patrolling the neighborhood. He is bold and extremely noisy. I am getting a crash course in peacock manners - they have none.
Found out that feral peafowls are nothing new in Florida suburbs and have been causing quite a ruckus for some time. www.sptimes.com/2002/05/02/TampaBay/Piqued_by_peacocks.shtml
So, I am thinking his friends will be back and our neighborhood invasion has begun. ;-)
