VIDEO - Insel Air - McDonnell Douglas (Douglas) MD-82 (DC-9-82) - PJ-MDB - Princess Juliana International Airport (SXM) - St. Maarten - October 2, 2010 2 091

Insel Air - McDonnell Douglas (Douglas) MD-82 (DC-9-82) - PJ-MDB (c/n 48021/1078)

Aside from the 747 and 757, the MD-80 (like this Insel Air MD-82) perhaps generates the most intense jet blast while taking off from Princess Juliana. This is in large part due to the aft-mounted engines being closely paired and the fact that those engines are not high-bypass turbofans, but traditional turbofans (JT8D), where hot jet core thrust accounts for a greater portion of their power (as opposed to cooler fan air thrust on more recent engine designs.) I can only imagine the malestrom a Boeing 727 (which is powered by three aft-mounted JT8Ds) generates at Maho Beach when taking off.

Unfortunately, aside from the amateurish camera work, this video plays in fits and starts on Flickr for some reason.

Delivered brand new to Austrian Airlines as an MD-81 (DC-9-81) in February 1983 as OE-LDX and named "Tirol." Converted to MD-82 standard in December 1990. The aircraft was next operated by Spirit Airlines as N812NK beginning in December 1999. After Spirit, then went into operation for Kulula Air (kulula.com) as ZS-OPU in January 2005. After Kulula, Insel Air began operating the aircraft as PJ-MDB in June 2008.

UPDATE (September 2017) - In July 2016, PJ-MDB would be withdrawn from service and placed into storage at Curaçao International Airport (CUR / TNCC) in Willemstad, Curacao. The aircraft would be scrapped in March 2017.
