William Henry Hunt, Study for The Fly Catcher

This small study in watercolor shows the head and upper body of the figure in the finished Hunt watercolor, the Fly Catcher - a work exhibited at the Society of Painters in Water-colours in 1837. It seems likely that the study is identical to No. 159a in John Ruskin's 1879-1880 exhibition of works by Hunt and Prout at the Fine Art Society [dealer] in London - "Sketch for the drawing of the Flycatcher," lent by Mr. H.G. Hine.

The date of 1837 is consistent with the model being the artist's nephew, William Henry Hunt, and the features of the boy appear to be the same as the model who was appearing in several works by the artist at about this time, e.g., The Artist, Grandfather's Boots, Sleeping Boy, etc.
