14. William Henry Hunt, Study of a Countryman Reading
study of a Countryman reading
Watercolor, bodycolor, and gum arabic with scratching out
16.4 X 12.20 in., 41 X 31 cm.
Signed l.r., W. HUNT
Provenance:
(S) Sotheby's Billingshurst, 23 May 2001, Lot 1153 (P) 5,500, $9,100
At first glance most would not guess that this mature man was engaged in reading a Bible. But Hunt, who was himself an atheist, painted a number of elderly men engaged in religious activities, along with his many images of young people and women deep in prayer.
