A Graduate of Pomona
Fig 14a Attributed to William Henry Hunt, An Old Man Reading a Book
An Old Man Reading a Book
Port sunlight (Liverpool), England, Lady Lever Art Gallery
This watercolor is cited in the Country People catalogue as another example by Hunt of a man reading a bible. It does not, however, seem to be of sufficient quality to be an authentic work by Hunt from the middle of his career. Since the earliest recorded owner of the work was James Orrick, a major collector of watercolors by Hunt and others who was known to have forged even more works in the styles of the artists he collected, this is possibly one of Orrick's own creations in the manner of Hunt.
