3. Attributed to William Henry Hunt, Figures in a Barn, now known as A Maltster resting
Figures in a Barn
Collection of the late Cyril Fry
Watercolor and gum arabic heightened with white and with scratching out
15 1/4 X 13 1/4 in., 30.5 X 34 cm.
Rather than being a watercolor intentionally painted in muted colors, the current appeance of this painting is almost certainly the result of fading. If by Hunt, it would be one of the first instances where the artist painted an earthenware jug. Such objects only became prominent in the artist's work after 1830, by which time Hunt was much more skilled in painting the volumes and surface textures of such vessels.
