2. William Henry Hunt, A Miller in his Mill

A Miller in his Mill

Birmingham [England] City Museums and Art Gallery, No. 57/31

Watercolor

15 1/4 X 11 7/8 in., 38.7 X 30.3 cm.

While it has been suggested that the man depicted in this and the portrait of an old man in the Lady Lever Art Gallery, fig 2a, is the father of Hunt's wife, Daniel Holloway, this theory is probably not correct. Daniel Holloway was born in 1685. Assuming the Birmingham and Port Sunlight watercolors were painted in the early 1820s, Holloway would have been around 40 years old, which is not consistent with the likely age of the model for the watercolors, who appears to be much older.
