William Henry Hunt, Girl Reading, c. 1827

Private Collection

During the period in which William Henry Hunt was painting the early "Country People" in the Courtauld exhibit, he was also painting figure subjects in urban settings. There is no basis for concluding that the images of rural laborers were any more successful with the viewing and purchasing public. On the contrary, it is likely that subjects of this type were more popular, since Hunt continued to paint similar images until late in his career and largely abandoned the rustic images after the very early 1830s.
