A Graduate of Pomona
William Henry Hunt, Bird's Nest and Primroses
Bird's Nest and Primroses
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Frick Art & Historical Center, No. 1984.79.
Watercolor, bodycolor, and gum arabic
8 X 11 in., 20.3 x 27.9 cm.
Signed, l.r., W. HUNT
Provenance:
James Orrock (shown in photograph of Orrock's home in Byron Webber's 1903 monograph);
Henry Clay Frick (purchased in 1900?).
This was one of the first watercolors by Hunt to come to the United States. Although Henry Clay Frick disposed of most of his earliest prchases of European art, largely paintings by the Brabazon school, after his fortunes increased and he turned to the purchase of Old Master paintings, it is interesting that he (or his daughter) decided to keep a work by Hunt.
