William Henry Hunt, The Young Gleaner, c. 1832

The Young Gleaner

Present location unknown

Watercolor and bodycolor with scratching out

10 7/8 X 7 3/4 in., 28 X 20 cm.

Provenance:

(S) Christie's 20 March 1990, Lot No. 135 (P) £5,000, $8,270.

Hunt painted two replicas of his original watercolor of The Young Gleaner. It is unlikely that enough information survives to sort out the order in which the three were painted, and Hunt was so precise in making replicas of his own work that no stylistic differences exist which might help identify the primary version. The other two paintings are those in the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge University, and the one which was in the collection of Cyril Fry at the time it was reproduced in the 1970s in a small catalogue of his works by Hunt.
