4, note 2 (1). William Henry Hunt, Irish Hod Carrier, c. 1827

This is the finished watercolor of a Hod Carrier that corresponds with the study in the Huntington Collection, which is signed and dated 1827. The fact that Hunt signed some of his studies does not justify a conclusion that he considered them to be works worthy of being included in an exhibition at the Society of Painters in Water-colors. This was particularly true before Hunt was elected to full membership in the watercolor society, in 1826, since the limit on the number of works that could be exhibited by associate members made the choice of what works to exhibit very important. Hunt would never have squandered one of his exhibition slots on an unfinished work, even one that he signed, such as the watercolor of a gardener in the Courtauld Collection -- No. 9
