A Graduate of Pomona
Fig. 10b. William Henry Hunt, Outside the Gardener's Cottage at Chatsworth
Outside the Gardener's Cottage at Chatsworth
Currently Untraced
Watercolor and gum arabic
13 X 9 in., 33 X 23 cm.
Signed
Provenance:
(S) Christie's London, 13 Nov 1990, Lot 144 (p) £750, $1,240
It is universally assumed that the Gardner in a Potting Shed was painted at Cassiobury Park, which very well may be true. But, in the same basic time period when Hunt worked at Cassiobury, he also worked farther north at Chatsworth, in Derbyshire. This watercolor, which was identified when sold in 1990 as a view of the gardener's cottage at Chatsworth and which was clearly painted early in the artist's carrier, i.e., in the 1820s, shows a shed on the right which looks a great deal like the potting shed shown in the Courtauld's watercolor.
