It is universally assumed that the Gardner in a Potting Shed was painted at Cassiobury Park, which very well may be true. But, in the same basic time period when Hunt worked at Cassiobury, he also worked farther north at Chatsworth, in Derbyshire. This watercolor, which was identified when sold in 1990 as a view of the gardener's cottage at Chatsworth and which was clearly painted early in the artist's carrier, i.e., in the 1820s, shows a shed on the right which looks a great deal like the potting shed shown in the Courtauld's watercolor.
