A Graduate of Pomona
William Henry Hunt, Children in Aldenham Church, c. 1824
Children in Aldenham Church
Bushey, England, The Bushey Museum and Art Gallery
Ink and watercolor
44 X 32 cm.
Provenance:
(S) Sotheby's London, XX 2006 (P) £4,322 by the Bushey Museum with £1,080 being provided by the Art Fund of Great Britain.
From what appears to be the Bushey Museum's application for a grant from the Art Fund:
This architectural study is a historic record of Aldenham Church as it depicts the interior prior to the removal of the box pews during late 19th-century alterations and clearly shows the 14th-century nave, pulpit and gallery with glimpses into the aisles and the 13th-century chancel. Dr Monro commissioned from Hunt a series of drawings and watercolours of scenes in Bushey and the neighbourhood and this work is a finely detailed example of the resulting reed pen drawings with watercolour.
