William Henry Hunt, Saying Her Lesson (Candlelight), dated 1833

Saying Her Lesson (Candlelight)

Manchester Art Gallery, Manchester, England, no. 1890.51

Watercolor and gum arabic with scratching out

Signed, lower left, W. Hunt, and dated 1833

11.61 X 13.15 inches, 29.5 X 33.4 cm

One of the artist's most successful uses of candlelight to create atmosphere and to focus attention on the key elements of the narrative. The girl is almost purely shown in silhouette as she reads her lesson from the strongly illuminated book. Meanwhile, the boy (probably her older brother), is poking her with a stick, apparently just to tease the young scholar, as indicated by his mischievous expression. In contrast, the humorless parent or teacher is completely oblivious to anything other than the pupil's progress.
