For my major observations about the Courtauld Gallery's exhibition of William Henry Hunt watercolors, see what has been posted under the title of this album by clicking on Show More. Explainations concerning the numbering and order used in posting these album images with specific comments about works in the exhibition and images related to the exhibition catalogue are also provided at the end of the aforementioned introductory comments.

The authors of the Courtauld Country People exhibition follow without much questioning the datings of Hunt's watercolors set forth in Sir John Witt's 1982 monograph and partial catalogue of the artist's work. But Witt was incorrect about many of the dates he assigned to Hunt's watercolors, as shown by primary evidence concerning the artist's work which apparently was never considered by Witt, It is apparent that Witt simply guessed about possible dates for many of the large number of watercolors which Hunt didn't himself date. In this instance Witt provided no actual basis for a date between 1820 and 1825 for this fine early Hunt watercolor from the Birmingham museum. All that can reasoably be said is that this watercolor was painted some time in the 1820s. There is no evidence, stylistically or otherwise, upon which to conclude that it is the earliest work by Hunt in the Country People exhibition.
