A Graduate of Pomona
6. Attributed to William Henry Hunt, The Poacher
The Poacher
Birkenhead England, Williamson Art Gallery and Museum, Inv. No. BIKNGM.1681
Watercolor
12 1/2 x 9 1/2 in., 31.7 24.2 cm.
Provenance:
Given to the museum by John Mckay, 1930.
I have serious doubts about the attribution to Hunt of this unsigned watercolor. Both the figure and the background images are defined almost entirely with loose washes of watercolor, without the the pen and ink outlines that the artist typically used in his early works. While Hunt's backgrounds were often summarily painted, he did not dash out somewhat complex backgrounds with nothing but colored washes, such as seen here.
Another watercolor which is purportedly an image of a Poacher was once in the Hazeltine collection. Fig 6a is a photograph of a fairly developed study for that watercolor.
