Situated 8km (5 miles) from the town of Macroom in County Cork, Carrigadrohid Castle was built in the 15th Century by the McCarthys of Muskerry.
The castle sits on a rocky outcrop in the middle of the river, which provided a natural crossing-point for bridging the river.
(The name 'Carrigadrohid' comes from the Gaelic, 'Carraig an Droichid', meaning 'The rock of the bridge' ).
The castle is of a 'tower house' design, common in the Middle Ages, built in order to control and defend strategic points such as river crossings. Additionally, they were used as residences for local lords and chieftains.
The castle has been in ruins since the late 1700s.
