Before you meet the staff of Tonquin Valley Backcountry Lodge

The hike starts at Portal Creek Trail, and that means you need to walk for 20 Km …, yes, it is a long hike! Take some food , water, clothes, and camera gear, of course… And it is up the hill. Steady up the hill….

While looking for the staff at trailhead, we saw the stable, from where you could take a horse trip to the lodge, but we could not find anyone there, just horses.

Returning back to the car we encounter a black bear, frequently visiting this area. It was sudden and unexpected by us encounter. Just around the corner!

The bear stood up trying to get the scent of us. We quickly decided to reverse back to the horses. The bear continued to follow us. Oh my God! This is not good! I have read many stories that if a bear continuous to follow you and it is not scared of you, he wants to eat you. We continued going back, back to where we saw the horses, about 100 meters from the road. The bear continued to follow us. It was not good. The blood pressure rises in your veins, brain stops working, and you try to find the way to escape… We decided to jump into the horse pan and hide behind the horses, thinking of that it is better to be together with them than alone. The horses reacted very strongly, gathering in the corner of the pan, where the bear was coming from, making a big noise. We saw a black bear going on the path, towards us, eventually passing us, and at the end, behind the bear, there was an oriental guy, chasing the bear, just to take a few snaps with his tiny digital camera…. Ha, ha, ha...

So, we started hiking in, and in about one hour from the start, we met the lodge staff going in on the horses. Met the friendly staff! Sara and Kable Kongsrud.

Stay tuned for more!
