This is Dovie, one of the bison at the Oklahoma City Zoo. The buffalo used to be on the back of the US five cent coin. Marvelous creatures that used to roam our western states in herds of millions and were hunted to near extinction at the beginning of the 20th century. There are now about 500,000 of them again, but the prairies will never thunder to their hooves in the near future.
