NSW Environment and Climate Change Minister, Verity Firth at the launch of a new patrol vessel for the Solitary Islands Marine Park, 27/08/07.
To mark the celebrations Minister Firth also officially launched the new patrol vessel for the Solitary Island Marine Park.
The name of the new vessel is “Kestrel” and its rigid-hull inflatable design will enable patrols of the ocean and estuarine environments which are an integral part of marine park management.
The NSW-built 5.7m Cobia with twin 70hp outboard engines is well suited to rapid response activities as it can be launched from various locations along the foreshores of the Solitary Islands Marine Park.
This is particularly useful in the northern section of the park, which has historically been a difficult area to enforce effectively due to distance from the Coffs Harbour base.
Kestrel will also provide a safe platform to assist with marine mammal incidents and other research and management related activities.
For further information contact the Solitary Islands Marine Park office at the Coffs Jetty. Telephone 6652 0900. Further information is also available on the website: www.mpa.nsw.gov.au.
