Swamp Stomp: Avenue of Attack

After a day of slogging through the deep swamps of the Salkehatchie river, the cold, wet Federal troops emerged at the edge of dry land and found themselves staring into the muzzles of Confederate guns. The rebels had had two weeks to prepare a defensive line astride the old Columbia road and were prepared to defend it at all cost. This would be the first real stand of defense by the confederates since Sherman's army had left Savannah to attack into the Carolinas.

Getting though the cold, frozen January swamps was hard enough. Fighting a battle with rebs holding the dry ground would be even harder.

But one the bluecoats came.
