Flash of Red
The bold colors of the male red winged blackbird [Agelaius phoeniceus] flash as his epaulettes are revealed by his extended wings. Great flocks of these birds are common along the coast and during breeding season, the male's trilling call can be heard all across the marsh and in thickets of pine and myrtle.
We love these birds. They are our absolute favorite. The week we decided to move to the coast [years ago] a red winged blackbird visited our feeder outside - a rare event in our part of the state. We took it as a "sign". =D
Now our feeder is covered with them and in our backyard we are weekly serenaded with their songs.
