Lumley Castle
Lumley Castle is situated east of the River Wear in County Durham, the Castle has been owned by the Lumley family since the mid 14th Century. The most noteworthy owner was Ralf Lumley who became head of the family in 1374. He fought in wars against the Scots and the French and was captured by the Scots at the Battle of Otterburn. King Richard II assisted in his ransom payment and appointed him Captain of Berwick in 1392.
Today the Castle is a luxury hotel and Conference Center but the structure of the building remains relatively untouched (oh, and my Sister got married here!)
