hazard reduction, Yuraygir NP_0292_070508

Hazard reduction in Yuraygir National Park, east of Grafton, in conjunction with the Minnie Water Bushfire Brigade and the Rural Fire Service (RFS).

The major burn along a ridge north east of Lake Minnie Water is part of a program of winter burns to provide protection from wildfire.

This burn targeting the drier ridges using incendiaries dropped from a helicopter and remote area fire fighters takes a number of days to complete.

The objective for this strategic hazard reduction burn is to reduce fuel loads and in turn the risk of wildfire travelling through this area during the summer months

The effect will be that the fuel loads in the park will be broken by these areas that have been burnt making it easier to control wildfire.

This work also helps to protect the natural values of Yuraygir National Park.

This burn is a cooperative exercise between the NPWS and Rural Fire Service, local brigades and has been endorsed by the local Bushfire Management Committee.

The NPWS conducts controlled burns in many of its reserves over the winter season for a range of purposes including asset protection, strategic fire control, maintenance of biodiversity and research.
