SHM conducteur / Medemblik

A DETAIL: on the platform of the Hoorn railway station, the conductor on duty on the line between Enkhuizen and Hoorn wears a cap. Chance? Yes. The wearer of the NS uniform piece that has not been compulsory for some years simply says that he likes to wear something on his head. You don't see them that often anymore. Take a trip by train and find that the capped conductor belongs to a dying breed.

On the other side of the Hoornse NS tracks, across the footbridge, all conductors wear a cap. The machinists and stokers, by the way, too. That is no coincidence. They are volunteers of the Stichting Museumstoomtram Hoorn-Medemblik. They don't wear the cap because they like it so much, but because they believe that a cap, including its insignia, is part of the railway. It may sound old-fashioned, they say, but enough cultural and industrial heritage is already being thrown overboard.
