Berkeley Castle
The castle dates from the 12th Century. It was here, in 1327, that the deposed King Edward II was imprisoned and brutally murdered in a plot contrived by Edward's wife (the French princess Isabella), and her lover, Mortimer. The castle was "slighted", (made incapable of defense) during the English Civil War.
