San Macario Island
L’isola di San Macario è situata a circa 400 metri dalla Punta S. Vittoria di Pula (CA).
Il suo nome si deve ad monastero bizantino dedicato a questo santo che si ergeva sul lato occidentale dell’isola, di cui restano ormai solo poche rovine.
La torre saracena posta nella sommità dell’isola fu costruita nel 1580, con materiale tratto dai ruderi del monastero, già precedentemente restaurato e trasformato in tonnara.
La sua importanza derivava dall’essere posizionata proprio al largo della foce del Rio di Pula, approdo ideale di rifornimento di acqua e legna, conosciuto e utilizzato dai corsari africani ma praticamente indifendibile: la torre di San Macario con i suoi cannoni impediva così qualsiasi azione di sbarco. Nel lato occidentale dell’isola era un piccolo molo per brigantini e vi stavano i magazzini della tonnara.

The island of San Macario is located about 400 meters from Punta S. Vittoria di Pula (CA).
His name is due to a Byzantine monastery dedicated to this saint that stood on the western side of the island, of which only a few ruins remain.
The Saracen Tower placed at the top of the island was built in 1580, with material taken from the ruins of the monastery, already previously restored and transformed into a Tonnara.
Its importance derived from being placed right off the mouth of the Rio di Pula, an ideal arrival of refueling of water and wood, known and used by African raiders but practically indefensible: the Tower of San Macario with its cannons prevented any landing. In the western side of the island it was a small pier for Brigantines and there were the tonnara warehouses.
