3117ex Wadi Rum-- hailstorm in the desert
The last thing you prepare for when visiting a hot dry desert, intending to tour its dunes and mountains, is a freak hailstorm and thunderstorm. That is what we encountered in Wadi Rum, Jordan. Our protection against blowing sand was no match for the gusty wind, rain, and marble-sized hail.
Our guides had never seen hail-- but their grandparents had. Once.
Desert sands turned into lakes and flowing streams, and waterfalls appeared, shooting water off of the tall mountain columns surrounding us. (see upper left quadrant of photo)
Quite an experience---just not the one we expected.
