8040ex Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park
A very different kind of rock scenery than you typically find throughout southwest US. Starring into its depths you see a very forbidding landscape.
No other canyon in North America combines the narrow opening, sheer walls, and startling depths offered by the Black Canyon of the Gunnison. Parts of the canyon receive only 33 minutes of sunlight a day. The rock is primarily Precambrian gneiss and schist.
The geology has been a huge barrier throughout history. No evidence has been found of any people living within the gorge, only on its upper rim.
Located in western Colorado, the Black Canyon of the Gunnison was established as a U.S. National Monument on March 2, 1933. It became a National Park on October 21, 1999.
