4183e2 P900 end of route 66

Built in 1938, before the massive US Interstate Highway system was ever started, Route 66 was constructed as a 2300 mile continuously paved route from Chicago to Los Angeles. It was purposely routed through many small towns along the way. The nickname the "Mother Road" was coined by John Steinbeck in his 1939 novel "The Grapes of Wrath". This route offered unprecedented freedom to travel across the west and the Rockies to the California coast

Once the interstate system came along, route 66 was decommissioned, and many of its highway markers have been removed.

This marker show the end of the 2300 mile highway, located at Santa Monica Pier, California.
