Another shot from our preview hike along the "Road to Nowhere" , a section of the Foothills Parkway that opened to traffic a couple of days later. This is above Townsend Tennessee, looking south into the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
This road was in the planning/ construction for nearly 40 years, as it ran into lots of engineering and funding issues. The original vision was to "ring" all of the communities that lie just north of the Smokies to connect them. Portions of the southwest and eastern road have been completed, but there are long stretches that have never been begun.
