5214ex2 P900 Uluru, as evening approaches
No photo can do this beautiful place justice. The huge red sandstone monolith rises from the surrounding sands of the Outback sandy plains and commands the entire region. The sandstone appears very different colors throughout the day, turning a deep red with sunrise and sunset.
Zoom in for more details of the rock itself.
Once known as Ayers rock, it is now called by its aboriginal name, Uluru. It is still regarded as a sacred place by the local peoples, the Pitjantjatjara Anangu.
