DSC_1917e male Hairy Woodpecker
I recently learned I was mis-identifying some of my backyard birds. I was calling all that resembled this guy "Downy Woodpeckers" when in fact this one is a "Hairy Woodpecker" Subtle differences exist in beak length and the white facial and neck markings.
Thanks to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and its Facebook fans for teaching me something new!
