BR Mahsud paddle steamer Dhaka Sadarghat 281109

The venerable "Mahsud" paddle steamer (now diesel powered) docked at Sadarghat, on the Buriganga, in Old Dhaka, Saturday 28th November 2009.

She's a Denny of Dumbarton vessel, assembled at the Garden Reach Workshop in Calcutta around 1927 or 1928, for the River Steam Navigation Company. The RSNC was nationalised in 1972 and "Mahsud" is now operated by the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC).

Despite her age, she and her sisters were still in regular use on the 'Rocket' service to Khulna - paddle steamers being particularly well suited to the delta waters of Bangladesh, having a shallow draught and naturally leak tight hulls (no underwater propeller shaft to seal).
