IR WDM3A 16081 WDM2 16871 stabled BTI 110318
Ludhiana WDM3A 16081 and Abu Road WDM2 16871 stabled in the north end bays at Bathinda Junction in the afternoon of Sunday 11th march 2018.
Virtually eradicated by conversion to WDM3As or withdrawal WDM2s are extremely rare these days, although I saw three ABR examples working in a week. I didn't manage to have any though, sadly. I did get a run with 16871 the previous year and it was a beast, so good in fact I didn't realise it was a WDM2 until I got off! The latter built ones were often pretty loud chuggers, one possible factor would have been the use of a different, higher efficiency turbocharger (judging by the larger shape of the exhaust stack).
At one point in the late 1990's there must have been over 2500 WDM2s running about, now they're down to less than 100, with even fewer on mainline duties! Sad that the iconic backbone of IR for four decades is about to fade into history.
